 Background:
As a result of the Chief Medical Officer’s report “Good doctors, safer patients” (July 2006) an Expert Working Group assisted by NCAS developed the Practitioner Health Programme.
A second group (Health of Health Professionals Working Group chaired by NCAS) has worked on a national strategy on the health of all health care professionals.

Brief summary of current Service – Practitioner Health Programme (PHP):

PHP is funded by DoH for 2 years (2008 – 2010) – the funding will run out by the end of this year. It is a service for doctors/dentists living and/or working within the London SHA catchment areas with mental health / addiction problems (any level of severity) and/or physical health problems
if there are concerns regarding performance. PHP works in agreement with the GMC that practitioners contacting the service will be treated on a confidential basis. It can approach the GMC to discuss cases if there are concerns about fitness to practise.  Memoranda of understanding with the GMC and GDC are available on the PHP website.

London NHS Practitioner Health Programme – Report about the first 12 months:

PHP has benefited both health professionals and the patients cared for by these practitioners. The report also shows that a PHP service is able to significantly reduce the costs to the NHS as for example doctors who were off sick or suspended were able to go back to work. The report is on the PHP website:  http://www.php.nhs.uk/PHP-news/3.html.
You can find further details including contact details to comment on PHP/ the report on their website: www.php.nhs.uk.

The Health of Health Professionals Working Group makes recommendations to ensure that PHP’s principles and model of care of should be available across the country – their report will be published soon as well. Also, we will have details of all the current development and our involvement on www.dsn.org.uk
Feel free to contact me regarding details on DSN involvement/PHP/national developments on angelika@dsn.org.uk.
